Hello world,
My name is Akiho Schilz. I’m a dancer,
with a passion for languages and art, and this is my WordPress blog. In this blog, I’ll be writing about my experiences on a creative writing project which urges young writers to think about freedom of expression and censorship, exploring their meanings and limits in today’s world and the impact such discussions have on our life today, as well as the implications of these ideas for our future.
What is Free the Word?
This year, Eastside Educational Trust is running an outreach programme for International Pen’s Free the Word Festival.
Ten young writers aged between 15 and 25 have been invited to a series of free workshops at Eastside run by professional writers, poets and journalists, exploring ideas of freedom of expression and censorship through reportage, interviews, poetry and fiction. They will get the chance to visit various organisations that deal with themes central to the festival (including the Guardian, Index on Censorship, the BBFC and the Oxford Union debating chamber), and will be interviewing some of the international writers at the festival itself, focusing in particular on the ‘50 years, 50 cases’ campaign and anthology. The workshops, visits and festival will all inform a creative blog that will be shared with other young writers and artists around the world.
